Kenny Omega talks "Omega Man" doc, leaving NJPW, AEW | POST Interview - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-U2t3xAHq-I
0:00 - How has it been having such a long break from wrestling? Good but he’s kept busy with the office work that’s going into AEW.
3:20 - Does he rewatch himself?
-Rarely, but sometimes if he’s trying out something new. It’s strange to watch himself because he’s shy. He still hasn’t watched the final cut of the doc. He’s afraid to because it’s very personal.
5:20 - Was he afraid it would be a distraction?
Kenny needs a certain head space to be ready for his big matches. He was worried how he’d feel in front of the doc cameras. It was hard to convince njpw to give up footage.
Is that just the way it’s done in njpw?
Njpw very set in its ways. Kenny knew it would make the doc hard to film but he thought they did well.
“It’s unfortunate we have to blur the line” do you want to be more open about your craft?
Kenny says it’s case by case. He liked blurring the lines in his feud with Jericho. But with Ibushi it was too much. They weren’t involved with each other for years why couldn’t they hang out in public?
10:55 - Bret Hart was being filmed just before he left wwf. Is there interesting footage with regards to contract stuff?
Kenny’s doc was mostly wrapped by the time things got really interesting. The closing months and days before the last match were very interesting.
Is the door is still open for him to work with njpw? Why wouldn’t they use him? What is left for him?
Kenny has a sentimental attachment to the country, people and fans. Yeah he’s ticked the boxes but that doesn’t mean he can just move on. He feels like he has a responsibility to wrestling to go with AEW now.
Why does he think they haven’t called him? The G1 Dallas show is not selling so well.
It’s like sending your child off to school but you have to let them do it by themselves so that they can grow. He would love to be part of all of it but he can’t really do both without exhausting himself. The doors are mutually open.
15:40 - Inclusiveness. It’s important in AEW and the doc. How far back does that go in Kenny’s career?
When Kenny started he wasn’t thinking about that. Was a one trick pony, he relied on athleticism and stunts but then he realized that couldn’t last. When he was wrestling for something else (ddt) that was when he felt himself improve. Even with njpw he saw potential. There was room for more. He had an advantage over the other foreigners because he could speak the language. He wants to be a weapon used to his full potential.
18:50 - In 2016-17-18 he was very lonely and sad. That let him take the next step, expressing himself in the ring. He’s more in tune with himself as a human. He stopped wrestling to advance his own life and started doing it for others.
20:30 - Today was the day of the last nitro 18 years ago. People are looking at AEW to change the industry.
They aren’t looking to compete with wwe, they are just looking to provide an alternative. Most fans watch everything anyway. Want to bring in people who aren’t already wrestling fans.
23:46 - Kenny is a star in wrestling but not in Winnipeg. Does Kenny like having the separation? Isn’t he going to be giving it up because of the doc/AEW?
He does get recognized but everyone is friendly. He’ll have to take it in stride as AEW grows. It’s nice to be recognized.
Sometimes there are situations where people challenge wrestlers. Made him a target in America and the UK before. Now things are different. It’s nice meeting fans.
