Kenny Omega on the Art of Wrestling 67

The Art of Wrestling with Colt Cabana Ep. 67 - Kenny Omega
-Kenny is a little banged up and cranky but 'lets try and make a happy go lucky podcast'
- C: you said a comment, you wanna change how wrestling is perceived??
K: That's really one of the only motivations that keep me in it. Everyone knows its kinda gay, and not the cool kind. Everyone is trying to follow the flow chart. There's no limit to wrestling and that's why I do such weird shit.
- C: you play an intricate part in my life because I the day I got fired I picked you up from the airport for PWG. We got on okay and I thought things maybe weren't so bad on the indies. You and the bucks and Generico always made my times on the indies a bit better
- C: JAPW was a big break for you.
He went there to see Kevin Mathews and it turned out good.
Getting out of Winnipeg is hard because its so expensive. (In this it sounds like he hasn't yet moved out of Winnipeg)
- Getting into wrestling /hockey/ sports. His Dad had to sign the waiver. but he got pulled out cos it was affecting hockey practice.
-Choosing between movie (with lines), university scholarship or death-tour?
-All about the death tours in northern Manitoba: Lakes, driving, radio, suicides, trailer shops, food, going through the ice, almost getting trapped.
-The movie: he passed up a role as a drug dealer, connection through the sissy boy slap party (which was a running gag in the ROH locker for a while) Kenny explains the movie. Colt puts it down to Canadian humor. He was trying out for some kind of luchador story role but got given the script to sissy boy slap party. He says it was fun.
-Kenny's weirded out by being called a pro-wrestler, its not how he thinks of himself. family members and customs offers view him negatively. The bad thing is he cant say 'watch it and see' because he cant watch it himself. When Kenny was a kid he was in love with wrestling + with WWE. In his teens the attitude era was cool then there was ECW.
'I'm not the kind of guy to get embarrassed telling people what I like.'
- C: Is Japanese wrestling closer to what you liked as a child?
K: Its an art form, there will be someone who likes what I do.
Colt: You're a big star there right?
K: Aaaa not really.
Hes doing wrestling revolution project
Japan's treating him well. When he finally comes home he locks in his room. He always has to be 'on' in Japan. He's not anti-social at all.
Colt is all like, speak Japanese and Kenny is too shy
Colt: I saw you going back and forth with this guy! Oh what??
Hawkins and Ryder (who knew him in DSW) told Colt that Kenny was wacky. Kenny says he was losing his mind. He had to do something and getting in trouble was funny to him. The whole situation is/was bullshit.
At one point in developmental Colt lost it and wrestled as Dan Severn.
They talk about developmental, Kenny slags off people who come through the system, they're just yes men.
-WWE care too much about the body, in Kenny's opinion you should be in shape to be a wrestler but that doesn’t mean just packing on muscle. (Are you in the best shape of your life Colt?)
-We called your cell phone and you didn’t answer?? Have two cell phones, why don’t you have a twitter account. Its always something.
- C: You quit right?
-Greg Gagne getting fired is the reason Kenny gives as his last straw for leaving. ("You're gonna make them cum" )
-K: I'll submit story ideas, maybe it will be better on TV. Kennys story ideas: Being Matt Striker's student/Street car racer.
-Talks to Johnny Ace etc
-Really considered leaving after
-Worked in the airport, his girlfriend dumped him because he wasn't making any money. Tried the Indie thing again. At least he had some fundamentals now. It numbed him too, 'I can never be affected as much by anything now.'
- C: Wrestling the dude outside and wrestling the Japanese dude.
- K: Japan said, we want you to wrestle Ibushi but he's kinda crazy, see what you think. Kenny thought, I gotta do something more than just a promo. Sent the Mike Angels video to DDT and they put it on youtube. But he screwed himself a bit because he didn't want to do anywhere matches for anyone.
-Little girl match, colt thinks it was great. Stardom. He'd had some accidents and it always makes him sad but he doesn't go through it in detail here. Training Haruka, she really wanted to learn. Negative press
- C: What video games are you playing? Hes really excited to play Batman Arkham City
-Doesn't want any bookings, but then wait wtf is he talking about. Please do contact him.
